The book Ulithi Atoll, Micronesia makes a lasting academic contribution to Micronesian. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are capable of meeting global operational requirements. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Pacific Island Studies. The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. The submarine tenders provide maintenance, hotel services and logistical support to submarines and surface ships in the U.S. Navy's only submarine tenders, Land and USS Frank Cable (AS 40), as well as four Los Angeles-class attack submarines. 19, and has been supporting theater security cooperation efforts around the Indo-Pacific region, including engagements in Australia, India and the Philippines. Land departed its Naval Base Guam homeport, Aug. The oiler still remains in the Ulithi lagoon as a memorial for more than 50 Sailors who lost their lives onboard. The operation, conducted by Navy divers, included the tapping of storage tanks and ultimately resulted in the pumping off of almost two million gallons of oil still located within the oiler. In 2003, the Navy completed a cleanup operation after it was discovered the oiler was leaking oil into the lagoon. The USS Mississinewa (AO 59) was sunk while at anchor during an attack by manned torpedoes known as kaitens launched by the Japanese in November 1944. ![]() Also, the remnants of a Navy fleet oiler can be found at the depths of the Ulithi lagoon. The airfield on the island of Falalop was used by the Navy during World War II and is still operational. The history of the atoll can still be seen to this day. Potentially, in a time of conflict, the location could again represent a logistical hub capable of supporting the fleet. Luckett said the evolution demonstrated Land could set up shop, bring a submarine alongside, and do all of the things needed inside the lagoon without any support from external sources. Land deployed small boats while anchored. The purpose of Land’s visit is to demonstrate the submarine tender’s ability to return to Ulithi and successfully anchor within the lagoon. “At the height, there were as many as 700 ships anchored there in the lagoon, including dry docks, repair ships, tenders, battleships, aircraft carriers, destroyers and sea planes.” Michael Luckett, Land’s commanding officer. “It was the logistical hub for the invasions in the Philippines, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa – all of those operations were launched from the base at Ulithi,” said Capt. The atoll played a major role during World War II for the United States Navy by providing a forward operating base in the Western Pacific. 7.Īdministered by Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia, Ulithi Atoll consists of 40 small islands, with only four of them being inhabited, and all of the islands surround one of the largest lagoons in the world. Land (AS 39) visited Ulithi Atoll in the Caroline Islands, Dec. The use of IKONOS imagery in GIS provides an immediate solution for new and up-to-date maps for development planning.ULITHI, Micronesia - The submarine tender USS Emory S. Recommendations are: Updating of the existing topographic map for Yap to account for expanding infrastructure in Colonia harbour should be completed. The completion of the multibeam survey of Yap harbour and approaches provides for excellent baseline data for future infrastructure development. ![]() Detailed maps and visualisation of seabed wrecks provides an opportunity for tourism e.g. Conclusions are: The dataset for Ulithi lagoon provides excellent baseline information for long-term assessment of the impacts of the wrecks on the environment. Digital side-scan imagery for all surveyed lines for both Ulithi and Yap harbour were collected and is presently only archived for processing should this facility become available. The results of the mapping for Yap and Ulithi are available in GIS format. These results have been presented in map form as contours and as soundings. The mapping of Yap harbour was also completed. ![]() The most interesting feature seen were elliptical-shaped mounds which may imply bi-directional bottom currents of similar magnitudes. Results of this mapping did not delineate any extraordinary feature other than the existing morphology of the seabed. A second area was mapped in Ulithi Atoll along the NE eastern margin of the lagoon from Masu to Asor island. Abstract Seabed mapping was completed using a Reson 8101 multibeam system to delineate the seabed morphology in the vicinity of the wreck USS Mississinewa located in water depths of around 40 m in Ulithi Atoll.
